Google Earth Interactive Maps

The Maine DEP GIS Unit is now offering selected data, geographically referenced, from a number of the department's databases to the public via Google Earth. You will need to have Google Earth installed to view this data. For help using Google Earth goto the Help Center.

Downloading Data: For GIS Users who would like to download any of these datasets, click on the project or layer links in the Google Earth table of contents (Places window). In the balloon, there will be a link to a .txt file with attribute data and spatial coordinates that can be imported into most GIS systems.

GIS Data Distribution

MEDEP staff generate and utilize a large amount of GIS data. Non-MEDEP GIS data are typically distributed by the Maine Office of GIS.

MEDEP GIS Data is now being distributed using Google Earth (above). If you can't find the data you are interested in contact Chris Halsted (christian.h.halsted (at) maine.gov).

GIS Data Collection

The MEDEP GIS Unit coordinates the collection and submittal of GIS data from MEDEP program staff and environmental consultants. This data supports the geographic evaluation of sites and study areas in conjunction with environmental sampling data. A set of Spatial Data Collection Guidelines is now available to assist with submittal of data to the MEDEP Spatial Database.

GIS Maps

MEDEP GIS maps are used for a wide variety of reasons, including file documentation of issues at sites, providing evidence at hearings, for feedback at public meetings, and other reasons.
